HDNP Max Front CES 2009: LaCie Hard Disk MAX
More storage fun announced at CES, this time from LaCie with the arrival of the Hard Disk MAX.
I really like the design of a lot of LaCie’s products – there’s something very cool about a relatively staid product looking really well designed and the Neil Poulton-designed Hard Disk MAX is another stunner.
The product itself is pretty basic – a 2 drive USB hard disk with RAID 1 or RAID 0 redundancy. A USB port on the front for attaching another hard disk and a maximum storage capacity of 2TB.

But this is really all about the industrial design, isn’t it? Yours soon for $269.99

Apparently in Windows Vista, Microsoft still enforce and hard-limit (hard coded in tcpip.sys) the maximum simultaneous half-open (incomplete) outbound TCP connection attempts per second that the system can make, as in Windows XP SP2, in order to protect the system from being used by malicious programs, such as viruses and worms, to spread to uninfected computers, or to launch distributed denial of service attack (DDoS). When the limit is hit, in Event Viewer, there will be such an entry:

EventID 4226: TCP/IP has reached the security limit imposed on the number of concurrent TCP connect attempts

Unless Windows XP SP2 which has 10 maximum incomplete concurrent connection attempts limit per second, Windows Vista default limit is based on which edition of Vista users are using. For example, Home Basic has maximum limit of 2, and Vista Ultimate is 25 per second. Normal Windows Vista users should not face any problem or slow network connection with the half-open connections limit. However, heavy P2P (peer-to-peer) applications users such as uTorrent, BitTorrent, BitComet, Azureus, ABC, eMule (eDonkey network), etc, or P2PTV such as TVants, PPLive, PPStream, Sopcast, etc may face some error or slow download and upload speed due to this limit.
Due to enhanced security, to fix or crack the TCP concurrent connection limit in Vista is not as easy as in Windows XP. To remove maximum concurrent half-open connection limits in Windows Vista, apply the patched tcpip.sys with the following steps:

  1. Download patched tcpip.sys: Vista TCP/IP and UAC Auto Patcher (patched tcpip.sys is contained inside the archive) 64-bit tcpip.sys or 32-bit tcpip.sys. Alternative download link for 32-bit and 64-bit.
  • Open command prompt, and run the following 2 commands:
    1. takeown /f c:windowssystem32drivers cpip.sys
    2. cacls c:windowssystem32drivers cpip.sys /G “username”:F
Replace username with the actual user name that used to log on to Windows Vista currently.
The second command can also used improved lcacls:
    icacls c:WindowsSystem32drivers cpip.sys /grant “username”:f
  • Disable the TCP/IP Auto-Tuning feature by running the following command in command prompt:
netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=disable
  • For 64-bit Windows Vista (x64), the integrity checks need to be disabled as it need all drivers to be signed. So run the following command in DOS prompt:
  • bcdedit.exe -set loadoptions DDISABLE_INTEGRITY_CHECKS
Note: Above command no longer supported, and users require to press F8 on system startup to bypass driver signing integrity check.

  • Replace the tcpip.sys in C:windowssystem32drivers folder with the patched tcpip.sys downloaded from step 1 (remember the use the correct x64 or x86 version). Normally, this procedure can be done by simply login to Windows Vista with administrator account. However, if the process failed, reboot the computer and then press F8 to boot up in Safe Mode, and then copy and paste overwrite the tcpip.sys.
  • Next, the maximum number of TCP half complete connection limits need to be set in registry. Open registry editor (regedit), and navigate to the following registry key:
    HKEY_LOCALL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesTcpipParameters
  • Right click on the right pane, select “New”, then select “DWORD value”. Enter the new value name as “TcpNumConnections” (without quotes).
  • Double click on TcpNumConnections registry value, and modify the value data to the desired maximum TCP/IP connection limit that you want to allow, in decimal value. For example, enter 500 as the value data for TcpNumConnections. You can use any limit that you prefer. Alternatively, download this registry registration file (another download link) that when executed, will set the TCP simultaneous connection limit to 16777214 (you can always modify the value in the file or in the registry after applied).
  • Restart computer.
  • New: Windows Vista Event ID 4226 Auto Patcher
Windows Vista Event ID 4226 Auto Patcher has been renamed as Vista tcpip.sys and UAC Auto Patcher, which now has more than 6 versions of auto patcher download links for different versions of tcpip.sys with the release of various hotfixes and SP1. Visit here for details.
New: Half-Open Limit Fix (Automated tcpip.sys Patch using Test Self-Signed Certificate)

Also Available – Driver Version: CrackTcpip.sys for Vista SP1 v.668 – a non-patching method to bypass TCP connection limit.
Also available is TCP/IP auto patcher for 64-bit (x64) Windows Vista SP1
Gui Version: VistaTcpPath TCP Auto Patcher which works for Vista RTM (non-SP1) version of tcpip.sys.
    Old Version:

    Version 1.0
    Version 1.2
    Version 1.3
    Version 1.4
    Version 1.5
With thanks to YaronMaor for batch script.
The TCP connection limit which trigger Event ID 4226 has now increased to 500 (or any other value you set), and will likely fix the error for re-occurring again

In modern advanced Windows operating system, renaming the name or label of the hard disk drive, partition or volume is an easy task, just like how user renames a file or folder. Normally when formatting a hard disk drive or partition volume, user can enter a label for the volume. And, for user who need to perform the renaming in command prompt DOS environment, the old good “label” utility comes to help.

Label, label.exe is a command-line utility to view or change the label or name of the computer disk drives that is available in most Microsoft MS-DOS and Windows operating system including Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Server 2000, Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2008, Windows Vista, Windows 7, and likely all future versions of Windows OSes.

To use label.exe to create, change, or delete the volume label of a disk, use the following syntax:

    LABEL [drive:][label]

    For example,

    label c: myvolume

Above command will label the C: drive to “myvolume”. Note that the label command only work if the disk is not write protected.

User can also simply enter “label” command to view current label on the working drive, and when doing so, automatically get a prompt to enter new label if wanted to change the name of the partition.

Be careful when label a volume with ASCII or other extended characters, as ScanDisk in MS-DOS 6.0 or lower cannot recognize the characters, hence assume the label is corrupt or incorrent data, and will attempt to fix the label. If scandisk attempts to fix the harddisk’s label, it may remove all information and place it into a CHK file.

Besides, fdisk utility also cannot delete the partition with unrecognizable characters. However, user can always use label utility to rename and change the name of volume for deletion in fdisk to work

Virtual data center services provider, SoftLayer Technologies, has extended its portfolio of available server hardware options with the addition of solid state drives (SSDs).

SSDs are an enterprise-level solution for reliable and secure storage. Unlike disk-based storage drives, SSDs have no moving parts. This decreases their power consumption, cooling needs, and performance latency. It also greatly reduces their risk of mechanical failure, making SSDs more durable than traditional disk-based drives.

Beyond the advantages of low latency and decreased power and cooling, SoftLayers solid state drive offering provides:

    • Latest generation SATA interface

Offering solid state drives is yet another way that SoftLayer is meeting customers needs with an enterprise-class, leading-edge technology solution. SSDs provide greater performance and power efficiency, which can be leveraged to attain a higher margin of cost-effectiveness.

SoftLayer is currently offering the following drives:

    • 32 GB SATA Intel SLC Solid State Drive $50.00 per month
    • 64 GB SATA Intel SLC Solid State Drive $100.00 per month

Cloud hosting is a web hosting service delivered from a group of connected servers. The term cloud hosting (also called clustered hosting) is not precisely defined yet. In general, however, a hosting service can be considered cloud hosting when it is delivered from a fully redundant, multi-server system, in which the resources are dynamically scalable and often virtualized.

In less technical terminology, cloud hosting uses a number of servers all connected together (a cloud), and sites on the servers can use resources from all the servers in that cloud. Processing power, hard drives, and memory are shared. Servers can be easily added or removed as necessary, and if one server is down, sites use resources from other servers instead.

Im currently on a reseller, and as I gain clients Ill be moving to a VPS in the very near future from the looks of it.

Coming from a reseller where I havent had any performance spikes, and everything has been working great….what sort of specs should I look for in a VPS in terms of RAM?

    I like using cPanel/WHM.

As far as shared hosting, and reseller hosting the main aspects are simply space and bandwidth. Then of course the company ethics and support reliablility and whatnot. From a server aspect, its just space and bandwidth provided.

Im assuming a VPS adds a few new dimensions including RAM.

Youll want 512MB RAM at the very least (very possibly more). CPanel doesnt run well with anything less

It would be helpful to know your average space/bandwidth usage. It also interesting to note that you are planning on moving before your host even alerts you that your reseller again is starting to reach the limits of their service. Well youre being proactive, but if its not broke… dont fix it.. just my opinon…. however if you are expecting rapid growth, that does not apply.

When looking for a vps, I recommend a HyperVM/OpenVZ combination. You also need to look at a VPS from this standpoint. If you go unmanaged, you can save a boatload of money, however you need to be familiar with SSH and capable of fixing most of the common problems regarding cPanel/servers. If you are unable to do this, you will have to go the route of managed which on average is much more expensive.

You need at least 512MB if you are planning on running cPanel. Anything less will result in a nasty performance hit.

WHT is a great place to start searching for a VPS provider. The offers section, this thread, or “Find a Host” are three great ways to go about getting started.

I never used VPS before, so not sure about that. Is that like a real pc need at least 1GB ram or more?

Windows 2008 needs 512 MB of RAM, but I really recommend you have atleast 1GB

I am looking for a VPS hosting company that basically allows unlimited email sending without restrictions. Does it necessarily have to be off-shore?

I will be sending about 300k per day, or somewhere in that neighborhood.

The bandwidth and storage I am not too concerned about.

    Thanks for your input.
