I installed Windows Live Messenger 2009 (aka Messenger 9) and
it’s not working for me so I want to uninstall it. Problem is
it’s not listed in Control Panel. Like others uninstalling
Messenger 9 I’ve deleted the files from the systems disk but
whenever I try reinstalling Messenger 8.5 it says that I’m still
using 9.0. Should I give up and just reformat my whole system?

I’ve been getting variations on this question a lot lately
because people can’t seem to resist installing Beta software. (Hint:
don’t – no matter what anyone says – unless you
really know what you’re doing.)

As with all Beta software, there may be problems and you may find
yourself wanting to revert to the previous version.

Except in this case Microsoft has done a nice job of hiding the
uninstaller. Yes, it’s there, it’s just not obvious. And no, a
reformat isn’t required.

I have to repeat myself about installing Beta software. To put it
bluntly, unless you really know what you’re doing, installing Beta
software is asking for trouble. So don’t be surprised at all when
trouble finds you.

The right way to install Beta software is to:

"… unless you really know what you’re doing, installing Beta
software is asking for trouble."
  1. Take a full image backup of your machine.
  2. Install the Beta software.
  3. Play with the Beta software to try it out and see if you
    like it or not.
  4. Restore your machine completely from that
image backup to remove the Beta software.

Beta software shares at least one characteristic with viruses:
once it’s on your machine you don’t really know what it’s going to
do. It will have bugs, and there’s no guarantee that
uninstalling just the application, or updating the application to a
later version, will actually work. If you read the licensing
agreement for Beta software, you’ll typically find that they warn
you about exactly this.

I know we don’t always follow those rules, and that’s one way we
end up with systems that have problems and software that doesn’t
work.

Enough said.

Let’s uninstall.

I don’t normally run Windows Live Messenger, so this was a good
opportunity for me to download it and try it out. I was surprised at
the size of the installation, and it quickly became clear that
Microsoft was attempting to "bundle" a number of applications into a
single installation. Yes, you could choose only one, like Messenger,
but the download was still significantly larger than in versions
past. That was my first clue.

Windows Live Messenger About Box

With Windows Live Messenger installed, I went to Control Panel’s
Add/Remove list, and sure enough, it wasn’t there. But something
else was
:

Windows Live Essentials Uninstall

"Windows Live Essentials" appears to be the umbrella uninstaller
for Windows Live Messenger and all the other Windows Live products
you may have installed. Click on its Change/Remove.
You’ll be asked if you want to Uninstall, or Repair a Windows Live
program. Select Uninstall and click
Continue
. Then you’ll get the list:

Windows Live Essentials Uninstaller

Make sure that Messenger is checked and click
Continue.

Windows Live Messenger is Uninstalled

That’s it. Windows Live Messenger has been uninstalled from my
machine, and hopefully now from yours as well.

Msn Errors: Repair Windows Live Messenger
Ed Bott is probably my favorite person to read when it comes to covering Windows and other Microsoft software. Today I noticed a little post he had regarding a way to fix Windows Live Messenger in case you find yourself unable to log in. I didn’t think much of it, until my wife asked me why she hadn’t been able to log in to her messenger for a few days. I quickly went back and read Ed’s tip, then logged in remotely to her machine and deleted the registry key mentioned, and voila – she’s back online.

So if you’re having problems with your Messenger, the registry key you want to delete is:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MSNMessenger\Policies

Give it a shot – it might well fix your problem!

launch event, which included appearances by Jimmy Buffet and former VP Al Gore, who presented some chilling climate-change imagery that really showed off the ever-growing power of Googles great tool.

Google Earth still lags behind Microsofts LiveSearch Maps when it comes to local search capabilities. I had no problem searching for exact locations with Google Earth, but LiveSearch Maps did a better job of finding locations by keywords, such as a persons name, business, or landmark. I also think that LiveSearchs Virtual Earth 3D provides better 3D renderings of cities than Google Earths comparable 3D Buildings layer. However, Google Earth provides far deeper, richer environments to explore. Its just more fun to use, and the latest version of Googles offering only propels it further ahead of the competition.

Google Earth maps both the ocean surface and the seafloor. Navigation works in much the same way as it does when youre exploring on land, but when you zoom close enough on a body of water youre hovering over, you dip under the surface. At that point, you see a topographical view of the underwater terrain. I found that the interesting areas to explore underwater tended to be coastal areas. In the deeper ocean, I often found myself staring into an endless expanse of blue water. For a really exciting test dive, zoom over to the deepest point in the ocean, the Mariana Trench. You can find the trench off the coast of Guam. If you have the Borders and Labels layer checked, you see the entire length of the trench surrounded by a white border. Or you can simply plug in its latitude and longitude coordinates (11.35,142.2) into Google Earths Fly to field.

Note that your computer needs a fairly robust graphics system to take full advantage of the ocean view. I had no trouble when I used a desktop from the PCMag.com Labs with an ATI Radeon x300 graphics card. But my underwater excursion didnt go as well—and sometimes not at all—when I was piloting the older machine in my cube or my three-year-old MacBook at home.

Google Earth 5.0 offers 21 new layers dedicated to ocean exploration. So, for example, click on Explore the Ocean and you can view articles, images, and video for specific regions. The National Geographics layer lets you put your knowledge to the test by taking a geography quiz. Other layers include Jacques Cousteau, which takes you on a video tour of areas the famous explorer covered, and the cool Animal Tracking, which combines Google Earths ocean exploration with a new touring feature. The amalgam lets you swim along with tagged, satellite-tracked sea animals on their underwater journey. Clicking on an icon of a great white shark off the coast of California let me view the predators movements from its watery perspective as it cruised the Pacific.

The touring feature lets you record and narrate your actions in Google Earth, then save them as a KML file so that you can share your multimedia journey with others. Recording a tour is simple: Click on a small camera icon on the top toolbar, and youll get a control bar from which you can record (as well as play and, of course, stop playing or recording).
