This article shows how to setup your domain and your web hosting account. It also explains DNS, Nameservers, IP Address, Forwarding, domain registration and trouble shooting.

Introduction and scope
Almost Everyone who knows about the internet knows what a domain name is. It is what identifies a unique website or email server. When you send an email to someone@domain.com, the domain.com forms the domain name. When you type in http://domain.com in the address bar of your browser, the domain.com is the domain name of the website you are going to see.


But how does the computer know which page to show when there are almost infinite number of domain names possible ? How does it know where to fetch the webpage from ? This article answers these question and explains what you need to do to register and setup your domain and tell all the computers in the world that yourdomain.com should show your web page.


How to choose a domain name ?
There are many top level domains (TLDs) the most popular are the .com, .net and .org – Countries have their own like .us, .in, .ca, .au etc and then there is the new breed of domains like .tv, .info, .ws and so o­n but the most powerful king of all is the .com Why ? Because it came first ? In the domain market, single word domains sell for thousands of dollars and .com costs around 10 times more than the others and is as difficult to get a new name. There is a myth that domains with hypnens (dashes) are better for search engine rankings, I think there may be some truth in that myth, but domains without dashes always seem to cost more than the ones with dashes. The best way to register a domain is to determine the keywords you are going to target by using the free trial of keyword popularity and competition analysis from
www.wordtracker.com and get a domain with those keywords in it. Another school of thought abandons this approach and advocates brand name domains like yahoo.com instead of everything-portal.com google.com instead of the-only-search-engine.com and ebay.com instead of online-junk-acutions.com – you get the picture.


Name Servers Explained
Every computer connected to the internet has an ip address that looks like 123.234.123.234 An ip address consists of 4 numbers separated by dots, each number ranging from 1 to 255. What this numbers mean is not important for us, all we need to understand is that each computer on the internet has a unique ip address and if the GoldenRobot wants to talk to R2D2 on the internet, it has to know the IP address of R2D2 (name borrowed from the movie Star Wars). But Wait a minute, does that mean that there are o­nly 256*256*256*256 number of computers that can connect to the internet, technically yes. But that number is large enough for now until they start connecting ever microwave and freezer to the internet (imagine your freezer automatically placing an order for 2 liters of milk to the grocery store when it detects that your milk stock is diminishing!)

OK, now you must be thinking all the ip address stuff is fine, but how does it relate to domain names ? Remember that I said “if the GoldenRobot wants to talk to R2D2, it has to know the IP address of R2D2 ” – but all you give to your computer is the Domain Name of the website you want to visit, so how can it get the ip address ? Enter the NameServer.


The job of a nameserver is to resolve a domain name to an ip address. Simple.


A nameserver is similar to a telephone directory except that instead of mapping person names to phone numbers, it maps domain names to ip addresses.


One misconception that I would like to clarify, some people think that each domain name maps to a unique ip address, not true. Just as many people in a house can share a single telephone number, many domain names can share a single ip address. The NameServer will return the same ip address for all of these domains and when the browser connects to that ip address, it says I am trying to reach suchandsuch.com domain, the webserver then returns the correct page for the domain requested. Obtaining a unique ip address (known as dedicated ip) for your website is usually more expensive than sharing the ip address.


 


How to setup your domain name
From the discussion we just had, you would be able to appreciate that in order for you to get your domain to point to your webpage, you need to do the following in theory


1> Obtain the ip address for the web host where your WebPages reside – this is the webserver ip 2> Make an entry (Called as DNS Entry) in a Nameserver to resolve your domain name to this ip address. 3> Configure your domain to use this nameserver

Most of the time, step 2 will be transparent to you as most webservers provide nameservers in which they make the DNS entry for you when you purchase webspace from them. Also, many good domain registrars provide their own nameservers that you can use.


While registering a domain or after registering a domain, you will need to set it up to use two or more nameservers. It is common to use multiple nameservers so that if one of them is down the others may be used.


You have three options to set the nameservers



  • 1> nameserver provided by your web host Your webhost will usually have their own nameservers. In their documentation they may say you need to use something like ns1.yourwebhost.com and ns2.yourwebhost.com – If you use these, you need not bother about the webserver ip address or any other settings, just configure your domain to use these and you are all set.
  • 2> nameserver provided by the registrar that you register your domain with If you use this option, you will need to know the ip address of your webserver (provided by your webhost). As you will be using the nameserver provided by your registrar, you will need to set it up to point to the correct ip address for your website by creating a DNS entry. The ip address for your webserver is called as the A record and the ip address for your mail server is called as the MX record, CNAME records are used if o­ne domain needs to be similar to another domain, but you do not need to understand these options for a basic setup. Many top notch domain registrars in the industry provide advanced DNS management like forwarding your domain to another site, subdomains, email id management, wildcard dns etc
  • 3> third party nameservers This is an option that very advanced domain managers prefer when they wish to have more features and greater control over their DNS records which may not be provided by the registrar or the webhost.

Now a days, the line between the web hosts and the domain registrars is fading as most domain registrars are providing web hosting and most web hosts are providing domain registration. If you purchase your domain registration and web hosting from the same company, chances are that you may never need to do any setup at all.


What to look for in a registrar
It is always a good idea to register your domain with a domain registration site rather than with your webhost so you can be able to shift your webhost in case you need to without loosing your domain. A good domain registrar should provide you the following features



  • No Cost Domain Forwarding – To Point your domain to anywhere you choose, you can even use a long free web host url and forward your domain to it.
  • No Cost for Change of Registrant – Makes sure you can change registrars (transfer out to another registrar) for your domain without paying a heavy fee.
  • No Cost Domain Parking – You get o­ne page saying your site is under construction or something like that.
  • Domain Name Locking – makes sure that no o­ne can initiate a transfer request until you unlock your domain

  • DNS Server Changes – You should be able to login to your own control panel and make any changes yourself

Trouble Shooting Domain Name Problems
What can you do if you have trouble setting up your domain? First of all, remember that it may take up to 48 hours for your domain changes to propagate across the internet. If you wish to verify the settings o­n any domain, you can use our recommended

The whois report on any domain will tell you about the current nameservers attached to that domain in addition to the contact addresses, the registration date, expiry date and the date when the last modifications were made to that domain record. If the nameservers are not correct then you know you have to change them by logging into your domain name control panel or by contacting your registrar support.

Im currently on a reseller, and as I gain clients Ill be moving to a VPS in the very near future from the looks of it.

Coming from a reseller where I havent had any performance spikes, and everything has been working great….what sort of specs should I look for in a VPS in terms of RAM?

I like using cPanel/WHM.

As far as shared hosting, and reseller hosting the main aspects are simply space and bandwidth. Then of course the company ethics and support reliablility and whatnot. From a server aspect, its just space and bandwidth provided.

Im assuming a VPS adds a few new dimensions including RAM.

 

Youll want 512MB RAM at the very least (very possibly more). CPanel doesnt run well with anything less

 



It would be helpful to know your average space/bandwidth usage. It also interesting to note that you are planning on moving before your host even alerts you that your reseller again is starting to reach the limits of their service. Well youre being proactive, but if its not broke… dont fix it.. just my opinon…. however if you are expecting rapid growth, that does not apply.

When looking for a vps, I recommend a HyperVM/OpenVZ combination. You also need to look at a VPS from this standpoint. If you go unmanaged, you can save a boatload of money, however you need to be familiar with SSH and capable of fixing most of the common problems regarding cPanel/servers. If you are unable to do this, you will have to go the route of managed which on average is much more expensive.

You need at least 512MB if you are planning on running cPanel. Anything less will result in a nasty performance hit.

There are many good reasons to register an internet domain, and it is easy to do! A professional touch is one benefit of having your own internet domain. Choosing a host for your web-site is no small decision. Once committed to one, it will become very difficult to move your business elsewhere – not to mention the damage that can be done to your business if you make the wrong choice. This makes it very important to “get it right the first time”. Find out as much as you can about your prospective host before making any decisions.



When evaluating your host, you will obviously be considering price. But price is, of course, not the only important factor. You will also need to take into consideration:



  1. the speed and reliability of the servers and hardware
  2. the features the host offers and whether these mesh with your own requirements, and, of course
  3. the quality of their support services.

Let’s look at each of these in turn:



1. Speed and Reliability of the Servers and Hardware



The speed and reliability of your host’s servers will depend on several factors, including the quality of their connection to the internet, bandwidth, and the availability of back-up systems in case things go wrong. Here’s a checklist of points to consider when checking out your prospective host’s servers and hardware:



  • A T3 Connection (or better), close to a primary internet backbone.
    A T3 connection is approx 30 times as fast as a T1 connection. Smaller hosting providers – for example, the proverbial “garage operations” — will often use T1 connections, with no backup at all. They may be very cheap – but, be careful here, you can get what you pay for!


  • Effective Bandwidth Management
    In addition to having a fast connection to the internet, your host should be able to manage how its available bandwidth is used . As a guide, it should typically not be using more than 50 percent of its bandwidth.

  • Backup Systems
    If there is a systems, network or power failure, the last thing you want is to lose your data or to have your web-site go down for a long period. Good hosts will have back up systems in place to guard against this.


Look for a host who can provide:



  • Regular, daily back up of your data


  • Backup power supplies
    Look for an uninterruptible power supply system (often referred to as “UPS”) – a back up power generator available in case of emergencies.


  • Redundancy
    Do they have more than one connection to the internet, in case one of their connections goes down.


  • An “Uptime” Guarantee
    These typically state “We guarantee 99% (or 99.5%) uptime”.

Here’s a sample of the kind of information that the web host should be supplying – this one taken from the web-host Interliant ( http://webhosting.interliant.com ) :



“Our Internet connectivity is supplied by three separate diverse backbone providers: UUNET, SAAVIS and Goodnet. If one of these lines goes down, traffic is automatically routed through the lines that are still online. Our data center is supplied by multiple redundant power sources – centralized automatic UPS system with a battery-powered backup system. The batteries are also connected to three diesel power generators in the event of a power outage to the building.”



2. Features



As well as checking out the reliability of the servers and hardware you will also need to evaluate and compare the features provided by your host.

A full range of hosting features can be viewed on Webhostdir.com’s “advanced search”, which compares hosting providers on both price and features. This is an excellent facility for comparing features when choosing a host – but to make the best use of it, you will need first to prepare a list of features you require.



Here’s a checklist of things to consider:




  • Shared or Dedicated Server?
    Depending on your requirements, you may be better off with a dedicated server than a shared server. Dedicated servers are typically used in cases where there is a high level of traffic, there is a strong need for security, or the user wishes to run their own customised software and applications rather than the standard ones supplied by the host.

  • Compatibility with Existing Software and Skills
    Is your host’s server, software and support services compatible will the skills and software that you (or your design team) are using? If, for instance, you are used to working in a Unix environment, then it probably makes little sense to choose an NT host.


  • Flexibility and Room for Growth
    You do not need a database solution now, perhaps, but you may need one in the future. Similarly, a shared hosting arrangement may be fine for you now, but what if your traffic levels explode, and you need one in a years’ time? It is much easier to remain with one host than to change. So, when choosing a host, keep in mind your possible future needs, and whether the host will be able to accommodate them.


3. Support and Service



Once you have checked out the reliability of the servers and hardware, and located a host that provides the features you want, the final task is to evaluate the quality of their support services.



Most hosts now promise 24/7 support as a standard feature — but, do they really live up to that promise? It will be a good idea to find out before committing to them! Here’s a checklist of things to consider before making that all-important decision




  • Quality of existing customers
    What is the quality and calibre of the sites currently served by this host? If they generally host high-calibre commercial clients, then, if you are running a commercial web-site, they may be a better bet for you than if they mainly host, for instance, or small businesses with 2 or 3 page static web-sites. (There may, of course, be cost trade-off here.)


  • Opinions of existing customers
    A host may boast of its popularity, the fact that it hosts lots of web-sites. However, the most “popular” are not necessarily the best — they may just be the ones with the largest advertising budget!

    Indeed “popularity” can be a double-edged sword — support resources may more thinly spread, and bandwidth may be squeezed as a result of the numbers hosted.

    So don’t go on numbers alone. Get in touch with some of the hosts existing (or past) customers, and ask them what they really think of the service and reliability of their host.

  • Stability
    The last thing you want is for your host to go out of business. So try to get some idea of how stable they are. Number of years in business is sometimes (not always, of course) a good indicator.


  • Support and Responsiveness
    Try asking the support staff a few technical questions of the type you anticipate you will be asking when you host with them. Then monitor how quickly and efficiently they respond.

3) Check the PHP, Perl & MYSQL details

7) MS Frontpage & E-commerce Enabled
If you have not designed websites before or even if you are an expert web designer, MS Frontpage is a very useful tool to help you manage your website productively. Although there are more than 3 dozens of effective HTML editors available on the market, MS Frontpage is the most installed HTML editor, site management and file transfer software in the hosting industry today. Prepare to learn how to use this tool. If MS Frontpage is not working at any point of your development, check with your provider if Visual Studio .NET Upload, Microsoft Web Matrix Project, or Macromedia DreamWeaver or NetObjects Fusion can be used to upload your data.

Secondly, check with your hosting provider if ecommerce script is enabled. These ecommerce scripts are free of charge and can be downloaded, but your hosting provider should have this script in your account when you sign up. Although it is not necessary important to jump start your website development, but it may just come handy when you want web users or companies to purchase or make payment for a product or service from you.

8) Good Email solutions
When I signed up with my hosting provider 4 years ago, there wasnt any spam blocking filtering solutions offered. In fact, there was no anti-virus software at all. It was so bad that I have to filter at least 350 unwanted emails a day. 4 years has past and I believe all hosting companies should included this very features in their system. If your account is not getting one of these tools, you may just be wasting a lot of time managing your emails. One of the simplest email integration system available on the market is CDO/CDOSYS (Mail Objects). It comes with IIS 5.0 or IIS6.0. You can use this to develop a lot application to utilize the Mail server in IIS. Check with your provider make sure that this ASP component is enabled. Also, be sure that your email accounts can be administered, read and maintained remotely through a browser. Write and save the login, incoming & outgoing email settings and password in your computer. At some point in time, you may forget your email logins especially when you switch to a new a computer or may just have too many email accounts like me

9) Disk & Data Transfer
Well, I did mentioned about basic hosting requirements in this article, hence I shall stick to the basics. I would suggest at least 120MB of disk space and 3.5 GB of bandwidth allowance for starters. If your site is growing in terms of traffic, see my other article on bandwidth allowance to estimate the amount of data transfer required. If your site is growing in terms of data and web pages, calculate the estimate number of web pages you intend to have and multiple it with the average web page size that you have on your site. To increase website management efficiency, we suggest that you stored records in MS Access or MySQL.

Here is good tip. If you are reading this article, ask some extra features for the things you really want from the ASP hosting providers and always negotiate the price with them.

10) Domain Pointer
A domain pointer allows you to register multiple domain names and have them all point to the same website. This is one of the very useful feature you can use to integrate with your ASP script. You can detect a certain domain name and direct it to certain subfolders. Why you want to use it? This simple service saves you a lot of hosting cost when you have more than one domain names that need to be hosted. There are some hosting providers that may charge you more than US$40 for a domain pointer. Avoid any charges above US$40 per domain pointer. Any hosting providers that charge a hefty amount for a simple service is not really a hosting company that is prepare to be your online partner.

Conclusion
Get at least 2 different browser ( Not included in hosting ~smile~)
How many times have you seen the message, “HTTP 500 – Internal Server Error” or ” The Page Cannot be Displayed” every time you tried to run your .asp web page? When you use Internet Explorer, that is what you get. The error message at times are not specific enough to facilitate you in debuging or troubleshooting ASP errors. You need a different browser to develop your ASP website. Try Netscape and you will get a proper error message when an error occurs.

Web hosting simply means that the web pages or files that make up your web site reside on the hosting companys server. That web server provides the rest of the world with access to your web site through fast, dedicated Internet connections.

The World Wide Web has become the single fastest growing scientific phenomenon in recorded human history. Like the Oklahoma Land Rush, everyones racing to stake a claim out on the electronic frontier. According to the Internet Index Issue #27, ninety-eight percent of the words in Websters English Dictionary have been registered as domain names. Thats a lot of real estate. In 1899 all you had to do was put a stake in the ground. These days its a little more complicated but were here to help.


Registering a Domain Name
Domain name hosting means that the domain name you have purchased points to the web site that is being hosted by your web hosting provider, so that your site can be accessed by typing your domain name into a web browser. If you want to set up and use e-mail at your domain name before your web site is up, this requires set up of your web hosting account. At that point, web hosting is in effect (as well as the charges that go along with it) regardless of the status of your web site. Instead of a stake in the ground, the territory of the web is marked by domain names. A simple analogy for how domain names work is your phone book. For computers to communicate with one another, they have to be directed to the correct “location” on the web, which is specified by a number like 201.168.22.111. Most of us can remember the phone numbers we call all the time but if someone asked us for the number of Microsoft so they could check on the latest Windows updates, wed probably be lost.


Functioning like a phone directory, a name resolution service was developed that allows a name to be associated with the unique number thats assigned to a web site. Its easier for most of us to remember names than numbers. So when you register a domain name, a record is created for it. When your site is hosted, the hosting company assigns an address to your domain name. Your domain name record is updated with the unique number that corresponds to your new web hosting space and that allows other people to be able to find your site using your domain name instead of having to remember all those numbers. A web surfer simply types in the name and the domain resolution service takes over. A DNS server looks up your number and sends the visitor to see you, so to speak.


These days registration of a domain name is almost totally automated. You simply choose the name you wish to register, choose a registrar and sign up. You dont need a “home” for your name like you would have in the old days (say around 1995). Registrars will “park” your name for you until you need it. This allows you to come up with the perfect name and register it before someone else does, even though you may not be ready to actually host anything at the moment. As long as you are listed as the registrant in the domain name record, you own the domain name, even if theres no site there, and even if the registrars tech support people are listed as contacts in the record.


Determine Your Site Requirements
Once youve made the decision to launch a site, you are suddenly faced with a whole new set of decisions to make – what will the site do, who will manage it, will it be updated regularly, will you build it yourself, will you sell things, will you collect email addresses, do you want streaming media, will you provide downloadable files, do you like the color blue? The questions can seem endless and in some cases, senseless.


You owe it to yourself to educate yourself to the greatest extent possible about the technology that you feel your site may require. The jargon may be a little intimidating, and to be truthful, no one needs to know what CGI stands for. But knowing whether or not you need CGI scripts to operate your site is something you definitely have to learn.


In the old days (you guessed it – 1995), most of the web was static. That means you put something up on a web server in HTML and it stayed that way until you changed it. Under that arrangement, “webmasters” were in high demand, since you had to know how to manipulate HTML at least a little bit to get things to work. These days, technology exists that enables just about anyone with a browser to update a web site. Some of these technologies allow web content to be pulled from a database, so instead of editing a site, all the owner has to do is change the data in the database, which is usually easier than remembering to close your font tags. Other technologies allow interactive online catalogs, automatic credit card validation, continuously updating news, streaming music and video broadcasts and even ad banners that know your name.


Once you know enough about your project to know what technologies you need, you can narrow down your search for hosts who offer those technologies.


Web Hosting Options Consideration
When it comes to hosting options, more is not necessarily better. Sometimes a hosting company who devotes their efforts to a niche market will have more tools of the type you need despite offering fewer overall options for site hosting. If you dont need database services, then a company who only offers simple Front Page site hosting may be perfect for you. Some hosts separate everything into individual “options.” which are sold a la carte, as add-ons to a basic hosting plan. Other hosts offer all-inclusive packages that cover most of what the average web site needs, with options to add-on specific technology support as you need it. Still others seem to offer everything you could possibly want as part of every single account.


If you do need specific technologies, be sure to read all the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) files a host may provide online. Be sure you understand how the technologies you need actually work – its not uncommon to see hosts touting “Flash support” as a hosting feature. There are no server components required for Flash movies to work on a site – the support is provided by the browser. This just gives the hosting company another “option” to make their list of features longer. But if you want to stream audio or video, you will need server-based software to assist you.


Contact tech support via email and ask about a specific technology – bring up a problem you may have had in the past and ask them if theyve ever encountered it. See how long it takes before you get a real response (not an autoresponder). Call the tech support number and see if real people answer the phone. Time how long you sit on hold before you get a real person.


If youre shopping by price, remember that you get what you pay for. More often than not, you can get a discount for paying quarterly or yearly in advance. If this is an option, consider it carefully – how hard will it be for you to cancel (if you can) if you are not satisfied with the service? Will the company refund your money if youre not happy?


Check the fine print on transfer limits, storage limits and email services. Will the company notify you when youve maxed out your transfer limit or will they just start charging you by the megabyte for additional download traffic? Remember that every single “call” to a page on your site generates a download – a “hit.” Theres a hit for the page request and a hit for every separate element that comprises the page – all those nifty navigation buttons that change color when you mouse over them – if theyre graphic-based, thats two hits for every button. All these downloads apply toward your transfer limit. If you plan to use 200 Mb of storage (most sites use nowhere near that amount of space), so people can download MP3s or graphics or some other kind of files from your site, youre going to have to be concerned with the transfer limits if you expect any measurable traffic.


The rules of good website building stipulate that any single web page should “weigh” no more than 30-35K. Using that as a guide, you can estimate the storage space youll need for the pages themselves, plus any downloadable files you might want to share. A graphics-intensive site would have “heavier” pages than a text-based site, so take that into account when youre looking for hosting space.

Cloud hosting is a web hosting service delivered from a group of connected servers. The term cloud hosting (also called clustered hosting) is not precisely defined yet. In general, however, a hosting service can be considered cloud hosting when it is delivered from a fully redundant, multi-server system, in which the resources are dynamically scalable and often virtualized.

In less technical terminology, cloud hosting uses a number of servers all connected together (a cloud), and sites on the servers can use resources from all the servers in that cloud. Processing power, hard drives, and memory are shared. Servers can be easily added or removed as necessary, and if one server is down, sites use resources from other servers instead.

I never used VPS before, so not sure about that. Is that like a real pc need at least 1GB ram or more?

Spam used to be just a simple canned meat product, made from hundreds of innocent little spam animals. Okay, well, maybe thats not what it was made with, but the fact remains that spam means something entirely different to the Internet community at large. While some people like the canned variety, almost everyone abhors the online kind.

Spam is well known for reducing productivity, wasting time, infuriating people, and sometimes spreading virus. Here is a list of 8 tips that will help you avoid spam. Although there is little one can currently do to stop spam altogether, by using these helpful tips I have personally reduced my spam to almost nothing.

1. Use a catch-all addy such as those offered through Yahoo! or Hotmail for signing up for offers, contests, non-professional newsletters, etc. online. Periodically check this account and clear out all the spam. This will ensure that your e-mail account wont be closed due to inactivity.

2. Be careful what you sign up for online. Make sure you read the privacy policies of the site involved; some will sell your e-mail address and some wont. Be aware of check boxes in signup forms that, when left unchecked, allow the company to share your information with other firms. If you dont want your information shared, make sure you check that little box. (This may also work vice-versa, with the checkbox being left unchecked to ensure that your information is not shared with anyone. Read the instructions carefully!) Remember: Just because a company seems reputable and you trust them, dont believe they will keep your e-mail addy private unless they specifically say so in their privacy policy.

3. Remember what you signed up for – if you sign up for a newsletter in the middle of the month, it may take another month for the newsletter to arrive in your mailbox. Keep confirmation e-mails in a separate folder in your e-mail proggie so that you can double-check that you did indeed sign up for any e-mail you think you may have received in error.

4. When you forward e-mails, be careful. Continuous forwards can result in anyone being able to harvest several e-mail addresses from just one of these bulky e-mails!

If you use Outlook or Outlook Express, use the BCC (blind carbon copy) feature to send mass e-mail. Simply enter all e-mail addresses into the BCC field. Eudora also has the capability to hide the recipients e-mails. If someone is sending you continuous forwards, ask the sender not to send things like this to you any longer. (These kinds of forwards are also an excellent way to get virii.)

5. Dont include your e-mail addy when signing guestbooks or online forums. Doing so will make your address available to all and sundry as e-mail addresses can easily be harvested from any website. If you want to use an e-mail addy on such things, use your “catch-all” e-mail address.

6. Along those same lines, be aware that posting to e-mail lists with publicly available archives will result in your e-mail address being shown to anyone who checks the archives or uses a bot to harvest e-mail addies. You can find out where your e-mail address has been posted by typing it into a search engine and searching. I recommend using Google for this, as it seems to currently be the most efficient search engine for this purpose.

7. If you have a website and believe your e-mail addy may be or has been “harvested” from it, you can use a JavaScript to prevent it from happening. You can easily get an automatically generated JavaScript for this purpose at Hiveware (http://www.hiveware.com/enkoder_form.php). Simply enter your information into the available form and it will return the code to you, ready for copying and pasting.

8. Never click on the “Remove” link found in many spam e-mails. This only enables the company or individual sending the spam to verify that their e-mail reached someone. Many will not remove you from their list as promised but will instead continue to send you spam (since they know theyre sending it to a valid address) and may even sell your e-mail addy to other spammers. If despite your best efforts you still receive spam, you can still do something about it. SpamCop.com offers an easy way to report spammers to their ISPs (or hosting providers) for terms of service violations. (It is a violation of most ISPs and web hosting services Terms of Service policies for a customer to send spam.) To get the information needed to report spammers, youre going to need what is called the “header.” The header of an e-mail contains all manner of specifics about who sent the e-mail and enables any ISP to determine who the culprit is.

To find the header in Outlook, first open the e-mail in a separate window. Now go to “View” and then “Options.” At the bottom of the dialog box that opens, you will find a box labeled “Internet headers.” Copy everything in this box and paste into the SpamCop.com form.

Using Outlook Express, open the e-mail in a separate window. Click on “File,” then “Properties.” The dialog box is entitled “Highlights from report.” Now click on the tab that says “Details.” Beneath the words “Internet headers for this message,” you will see a box containing all the header information. Copy everything in this box and paste into the SpamCop.com form.

Sending “hate mail” to the apparent sender of spam e-mail is counter-productive and a waste of your time, not to mention possibly encouraging more spam, some of which may have the potential to be malevolent. In some cases, your “hate mail” wont even go to the person whos really sending it. E-mail addresses can be “spoofed,” or, in laymans terms, the e-mail appears to have been sent from a different address than it was truly sent from. This is why you must use header information when reporting spammers. Its the only way to determine who really sent the spam.

If you believe someone with a privacy policy in place has used your addy for malicious purposes, contact them immediately. If they are of no help, contact their hosting service provider immediately and report them.

To find out what hosting firm is providing service for any given domain name, head to samspade.org/t/. Enter the domain name into the first field on the page and click “Do stuff.” A page will appear showing you the IP address that the domain name resolves to. Copy the IP address. Now go back to the first page and paste the IP address into the same field you used before. Click “Do stuff” again. The results will show you who the site is hosted by.
